Description
This lovely sunset view I photographed from Pitt Street Bridge in Mount Pleasant, SC, just outside Charleston. The Ravenel Bridge can be seen in the distance, which beautifully connects Mount Pleasant to downtown Charleston. Pitt Street Bridge was originally built in the early 20th century as a trolley bridge, it served as a connection between Mount Pleasant and Sullivan's Island. The bridge played a crucial role in transportation, facilitating the movement of people and goods between the two communities.
In the mid-20th century, the bridge was repurposed as a vehicular bridge. However, due to its aging structure and the construction of the Ben Sawyer Bridge, the Pitt Street Bridge was eventually closed to vehicular traffic in the 1960s.
Rather than being dismantled, the bridge found a new lease on life as a pedestrian bridge. Over the years, the local community and authorities invested in its restoration and transformation into a charming park space. The park surrounding the bridge offers stunning views of Cove Inlet, making it a popular destination for residents and visitors seeking a tranquil setting to enjoy nature.
