Description
Standing proudly at the intersection of Meeting Street and Market Street, the Historic Market Building is a two-story structure with an open-air ground level and an upper level enclosed by a wrought-iron railing. Its architecture seamlessly blends the practicality of a market space with the elegance of historic design.
The open-air ground level, often referred to as the "Market Sheds," is comprised of a series of stalls where vendors display an array of goods. Here, you'll find local artisans selling everything from handmade crafts and jewelry to sweetgrass baskets, a traditional form of Gullah artistry that's deeply rooted in the region's history.
The Historic Market Building is not only a place to shop and explore, but also a living piece of Charleston's history. It has witnessed the city's growth and changes over the centuries, reflecting the resilience and spirit of the people who have passed through its doors.
