Description
I recently photographed Dawes Glacier, located at the end of Endicott Arm in Alaska. It presents a striking and rugged beauty at the water's edge. The glacier's towering face, a stunning wall of jagged ice, stands over 600 feet high, with about 250 feet visible above the waterline. Its surface is a brilliant mix of vibrant blue hues, created by the compression of ancient ice, interspersed with streaks of white and dark debris. As you approach by boat, the stillness of the fjord is often broken by the dramatic sound of calving, where chunks of ice break off and crash into the turquoise waters below. Icebergs, in various sizes, drift slowly around the glacier, adding to the ethereal atmosphere. The surrounding landscape, characterized by steep, forested cliffs and waterfalls, enhances the sense of wild isolation, making Dawes Glacier a captivating sight in the remote Alaskan wilderness.
