Description
In the tranquil waters of Icy Strait Point, Alaska, a majestic humpback whale gracefully prepares to dive, its massive body arching as it descends beneath the surface. Just before disappearing into the deep blue, the whale's enormous tail flukes emerge from the water, glistening under the soft Alaskan sunlight. Each lobe of the tail is marked with unique patterns and scars, a testament to the whale's journeys and encounters. The distant boat adds scale and contrast to the vast seascape. In the background, the snow-covered mountains rise dramatically, their peaks blanketed in a pristine layer of white, contrasting beautifully against the deep green of the surrounding forest. The stillness of the scene is broken only by the gentle ripples that radiate outward, a reminder of the whale's powerful presence beneath the calm waters.I was lucky enough to capture this iconic image from a small boat just off Hoonah, AK, in August, 2024. The entire image reflects the crystal blue of the water and the sky on such a clear day in Icy Straight Point.
