A lone seashell rests delicately on a textured, weathered wood. The intricate patterns of the wood grain create a mesmerizing backdrop, complementing the smooth, striped surface of the shell. The contrast between the natural elements brings focus to nature's processes that brought them together. I photographed this miniature scene at the boneyard beach at Botany Bay, Edisto Island, SC. The beautiful weathered wood background is one of the many dead trees that lay along the shoreline there, reflecting the erosional nature of this wild piece of shoreline. The shell, of course, is also now empty of the life that once occupied it. Both reflect the harsh realities of nature's processes but give us the opportunity to view her intricate "beauty left behind".
